So here we are in the dog days of the Summer. In a peculiar way this is one of my favourite times of year nowadays.

Granted its a pretty strange time. A kind of limbo which is buffered on either side by the Spring and the Autumn.

The football season is over. Between the European Championships; the soap opera that is the transfer market; and the Olympics football tournament it might not seem that way to football haters. To me though Leeds United aren't playing.

Sure I take an interest in the transfer shenanigans and there's also allegedly a take over occurring at Elland Road. Mainly though I just enjoy the weekends without football. Don't get me wrong I love the football but you have to break from it sometimes.

Similarily live music becomes rarer. The live music calendar is based round the autumn and spring student terms. This is when all the main gigs occur. The Summer is festival season. Apart from Summer Sundae I pretty much avoid festivals. So gigs are still happen but things are a bit more spontaneous and free flowing.

The summer school holidays also make things different. The morning and evening commutes are much easier with the kids not at school and their parents on holiday.

The office becomes a grave yard. Suddenly my email inbox becomes almost manageable as everybody heads off on holiday.

The boss is away and I am for once my own man not beholden to anybody. However on the downside he or she has probably told everybody that I'm covering in their absence!

Answering somebody else's phone is a kind of Russian Roulette as well. There's always the chance that you will find yourself dragged into somebody else's problems.

Personally I'd much rather be working on someone else's screwed up project than my own screwed up project. You get the chance to be a hero and if you fail, well (shrugs his shoulders) it was already a mess before I stuck my medium size nose in.

Yes the dog days are a feverish and weird time. Almost like an inverse Xmas.

Too soon though it'll be over and normal life will resume. But until then I almost feel like I'm the master of my own destiny.
